Letter to André Bay:

I’m very happy about the prize [Prix Sévigné] and proud that my first prize came from France. Please tell me more about it as my friends here do not know what it represents.

I hope you are not disappointed about my not coming in May. I have been working too hard. I have given six lectures in two weeks, suffered from Irving Penn’s photograph in Vogue, the ugliest photo ever taken of me. It was strange that the minute he stepped into my apartment I had the intuition this cold man did not see me. I should have had the courage to send him away. If one could always act according to one’s intuition! The stationery store woman who sold me the magazine and saw the photograph, looked at me and said: “What have they done to you, poor thing.” How I would have liked to be in Paris to enjoy the prize. Did you read Regis Durand’s essay on House of Incest in Langues Modernes?
